June 2014

Early one Sunday, I had the occasion to walk into Newcastle via Gateshead town centre. It was a lovely, sunny morning and there weren't many people around. I had a camera with me and took a couple of random-ish pictures of the concrete-ness that is Gateshead's legacy from the 1960s. I actually like the way that the concrete hasn't survived too well. I've scaled the pictures down to 1024x768 so they fit more sensibly here.

I was somewhat surprised, on crossing the High Level Bridge, by the mess left behind from the previous night's takeaways. No street seemed to have been spared, although the Bigg Market was worst hit. The street cleaners were already out in force, so I'd imagine that everything would've been cleaned up before shops began to open. Living near a popular city is generally a pretty good thing, but there are some negatives.

At least the seagulls won't go hungry.
