Samosas

I have a great fondness for samosas. They’re so simple, but delicious. They’re currently featuring on BBC1’s Saturday Kitchen Live, including making the pastry from scratch.

However, I’m somewhat concerned by the statement It’s a traditional vegetarian recipe, but I’m using lamb.

Sleep

I’ve just slept for 15 hours, quite possibly my longest sleep ever. Because I have a weird cold (that’s a cold, not flu) which, apart from the usual symptoms, has made me crave sleep. But, since sleeping’s quite a nice thing to do, this isn’t the worst virus to have.

Avian decomposition

It’s that time of year again. You know, the time when people feel the need to educate vegetarians (and new vegans) in the benefits of consuming birds. For many years, I found this mildly irritating, although I could always feel smug inside knowing I was doing the right thing. Perhaps it’s an age thing, but it’s becoming moderately annoying.

I do, though, retain a clear conscience. Together with a lower risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and several of the other benefits of eating birds.

Out of control

Probably one of the most common reactions when someone encounters a vegetarian is, we’re designed to eat meat. Of course, there’s an element of truth in that statement. We’re designed to eat pretty much whatever we can get our hands on. But we’re not designed for what is now considered to be a ‘normal’ Western diet. And neither is the planet.

Dust

I really ought to remember that I have a dust allergy. My sneezing has prevented further bathroom wall activity today, so I’m doing some delayed computer maintenance. Linux upgrades are so much easier nowadays. The only issue after upgrading the bedroom computer was a need to reinstall the Silverlight workaround, to get Netflix working again, so I’m expecting no other hassles with this machine. Well, apart from mild anxiety around the Windows dual boot. But I’m hoping that there’ll be one less reason for keeping windows when the update’s finished; apparently this version has a workaround for the iPhone.

Sunderland

Yesterday, we went to Sunderland. Our main reason for being there was a visit to the dentist, but we do rather like the Isis. So we had to call in.

And then I introduced my second in command to what used to be the Clarendon. A pub with a view.

Unfitness

I’ve just had my first bike ride in just over a year. Actually, my first off-road ride in four or five years. And I now fully appreciate how unfit I’ve become. That’s seriously unfit.

There are some positives though. Most importantly, I survived and didn’t resort to walking uphill. And my 21-year-old bike performed a lot better than the (twice the price) Kona. To be honest, even though everything had been checked, oiled and tightened, I’d expected something to fall off. The bike, that is.

Unfortunately, while the bike performs almost as well as it did 21 years ago, I don’t. I’m now going to have a soak in the bath and wash the insects off.
