Autoreise

After last October’s numerous trips to see Augustines during what became their final tour, we’re now planning something of an autoreise to see their former front man, William McCarthy, as he embarks on a (second) solo tour.

Gig tickets have been purchased for Berlin and Munich, and flights booked (after lengthy discussion).

Orphan

She used to say she was an orphan. But that never was exactly the truth. Was just her mother got tired, tired of her hanging around. So she ended up living in a home for girls. She’s a straight haired kid in a house full of curls. A straight haired kid, always hanging around.

I have to say, I’m loving my new Fiio X1. And to think I was going to buy a new iPod. It may be a low end product in the Fiio range, but the sound is pretty amazing.

But she split that one horse town, just got tired of all the people who were hanging around. She split that ane horse town.

I’m currently listening to Sam Baker’s Orphan. My iPod is now in the bin.

Fiio

I bought my kids a Fiio X1 for Christmas in the hope that someone might buy one for me. And they did.

Oh my.

I couldn’t have imagined such sound through a shitty pair of Apple headphones.

I’m first trying it with Augustines, but Elbow has to be next. Then maybe some Eels. Shit, this is amazing.

Sshhh, let me listen in peace.

Johnny Cash

While on the subject of the afterlife, I just heard Johnny Cash’s voice in my head. In a booming, godlike kind of way, telling me to have another Jakehead.

Who am I to ignore the ghost of a legend.

Der-der-der

Last night, I went to the Academy in town, with Trevor – the first time in ages – to see the Fratellis.

The band was great, but there was a real sound quality issue and that pretty much ruined the performance.

I’d not heard any of their newest stuff before, but I was both surprised and impressed. But the evening was all about the 10th anniversary of Costello Music.

An unusual, but good, final song was a cover of Runaround Sue, the Fratellis style worked really well.

After the gig, we bumped into Mr Towers, who dragged us to the Hadrian teepee to meet up with the Fazakerleys and Mr Pratt.

So, while the sound at the gig was something of a disappointment, it was an enjoyable night.

Techno space rock

I went to see Matt play in the Tuns the other night. He’d described the music as techno space rock, so how could I pass. I wasn’t sure what to expect, I mean it’s not exactly the norm for my local.

And they were definitely different. I wouldn’t have thought that it would work, but it did. I’d certainly go to see them again.

Warfare

Karl and Steve didn’t win the battle of the bands thing last night. They were truly great, acknowledged as different from the norm, but stupidly good.

After the competition, I remained for some time, with free beer. That probably wasn’t my best decision, since work was painful this morning.

Peter and Matt

A few weeks ago, my mate Peter asked if I’d go to the Ship (tonight) because Matt would be DJ-ing. At the time, I declined because we’d be in Peterborough.

He hinted again this morning, but we couldn’t make it.

We’d cancelled Peterborough, but had kept the Ship in mind. Well, you never know.

So, on leaving North Shields, I asked if Peter would be in Ouseburn. There was no response, so, being the gentleman that I am, I headed to the Ship. A Metro and a cab.

And was he here? Of course not.

Matt, however, is doing a very good job. He’s playing Tainted Love right now, but played Augustines’ Cruel City a few minutes ago.

Off to town now for food.
