Weekend

Yesterday afternoon, we paid a visit to the second hand furniture shop in Ouseburn. Where we bought a rather nice mid-Victorian side table. It’s small, but solid mahogany and quite heavy. A bargain at £40.

This was followed by late lunch in the Ship Inn.

Although this picture might give the impression that the place was quiet, the opposite was the case. It’s great to see a vegan pub doing so well. The food was, as usual, really nice.

And I had a pretty good Oakham IPA, the first ever pint of an Oakham beer I’ve tried. And the first I’ve come across that didn’t contain fish.

Then there was tine for a pint in the Cluny before heading home.

Where I spotted a Lovely Eggs poster, for next Friday’s gig (top right).

And a Shiverin Sheiks poster, for next Sunday afternoon. We’ll be there too.

Today was largely spent plastering, which wasn’t as much fun as yesterday.

The number of the beast

We went to a party this evening. It was pretty good, way better than I’d expected. I don’t know why I’d not expected it to be good, but I (irrationally) hadn’t.

Anyway, today was a good day.

And my second in command displayed her true characteristics.

The Cluny

We’ve a small run of gigs at the Cluny coming up soon. In November, there’s the Lovely Eggs, followed a couple of days later by the Shiverin’ Sheiks. Then, in December, there’s Ainsley Lister.

The Shiverin’ Sheiks’ gig is actually free, on the afternoon of the 11th.

Please don’t go though, because we’d like to get in.

Marley’s ghost

We also visited Kingston today. Where we went to the Bob Marley museum.

There’s just the one picture, because cameras weren’t allowed inside. But it was worth going. Essentially, it’s a Georgian house, largely as it was intended, apart from the 70s recording studio.

The shot room was a little strange, though. Best look it up.

I did learn something new about the bloke. He was a vegan. Which makes him cool. Forget the music, he was a vegan.

Attention Seeker

My music player is now back in service after I’ve identified the rogue flac file which made the thing stubbornly refuse to play anything.

So my bus journeys this week have been in the enjoyable company of Felix Hagan and the Family.

A recent festival discovery, they’re now a favourite. Their latest album is Attention Seeker, it’s ridiculously good. We’ll be going to see them play in Leeds in a few weeks, with some festival comrades. Can’t wait.

Detroit Social Club

Really enjoyed the Detroit Social Club gig at the Cluny last night. A sell out and a great atmosphere too.

I bumped into an old mate too, which is weird because he popped into my head earlier in the day.

Profondo Rosso

We went to see the Lurkers play in our local the other night. Well, only because Karl would be playing, with his old band Profondo Rosso supporting.

Pretty good they were too.

An old favourite and a new

Exploring new music is an important part of going to a festival. For example, we came across Augustines (or, at the time, We Are Augustines) at T in the Park. While the band split up in October’ 16, they remain a firm favourite. I’ve mentioned in the past that we’ve been to Billy McCarthey’s (the former Augustines’ front man) solo gigs and his was a welcome addition to this year’s Kendal Calling festival.

And his performance was as good, if not better, than expected.

He played some solo material, but there was a really nice selection of Augustines’ songs too. It was good to hear a lot of Augustines followers singing along.

A new discovery at this festival was Felix Hagan and the Family, who were a great, unique experience.

They’ve a couple of albums, so I’m going to check out Amazon. We’ll also be watching out for any gigs in the Northeast. Interestingly, they’re playing at Bi Nuu, Berlin, where we saw William McCarthey last year.

Kendal Calling

Our third Kendal Calling was a good one. Tw\no days of burning sunshine, then another two of rain. We had three festival newbies and some veterans, but the mix was great. Our campsite was the best ever. The tents are already dried out and ready for next year. Which won’t be at Kendal (Penrith).

Some random pictures; probably too random.
