While sitting in the Tuns, while sheltering from the rain keeping my second in command company while she watches football, I glanced out of the window and, just for a second, saw the Angel of the North. And then realised it wasn’t.

Dun Cow
Sunderland used to be a great place for a night out. In the early 80s. But then the trend for tearing apart old pubs and inserting glass and chrome, which continued until there were very few old pubs left, pretty much destroyed Sunderland as a (civilised) venue.
But then there was the Isis. Although the chav bar trend wasn’t reversed, or even stopped, it perhaps shuddered. Until now. The Dun Cow, a sadly neglected old pub was bought by the Head of Steam chain recently. And, after a little money has been spent, it looks just great.
The beginning of civilisation in Sunderland?
The Famous Three Tuns
Our local
Just home from an evening in our local, where we had a very pleasant couple of hours with the Happy Cats (I may have mentioned them previously).
The band was great as always and I kindof liked the change in lineup.

Local
It’s been an emotional few days. My second in command’s Dad has been here for a few days. We’ve introduced him to the Bridge (hotel) and, last night, to the Tuns. And some other stuff.
A really nice bloke who appreciates hills and old stuff. We’ll be using his house as a base for a night out in Stamford soon.
He’s currently en route to Kings Cliffe (via Peterborough) his first train trip in 40 years.
We’re in our local right now, waiting for confirmation of his arrival. And I’ve noticed a minor typo.

One might think that the past few days were spent in metro stations and bars. While that’s partially correct, these were just examples of the kind of pictures taken with my phone.
Fishless beer
I came across this on twitter earlier today.
I’ve never actually been inside the Star and Shadow cinema, although I’ve walked past many times. The mention of vegan beer attracted my attention, even though most unfined/seaweed fined beer is vegan. So that’s our Saturday afternoon sorted.
And a visit to the Crown Posada afterwards could now be on the agenda too.
The Schooner
Mr Smith in Peterborough
Just had a lovely conversation with the barman who introduced me to Sam Smith’s chocolate stout. I’ve stuck to the extra stout tonight though. Beautiful beer in Peterborough.
