Carlisle

Had almost an hour to kill between trains in Carlisle, so went for a bit of a wander (and a pint in the Howard Arms). I know I shouldn’t have been surprised, but the gorgeous old Victorian market hall is now a Wilkinson’s store, on the ground floor. A new upper floor accommodates TK Maxx. It’s good that a stunning old building is still in use. And I mean that. But, I have fond memories of that market (from the 80s); there was a great little wholefoods shop, at a time when such things were scarce in the North.

Anyway, the Howard Arms does a respectable pint of Stella (the real ale all contained fish).

Travel card

A little while back, the travel card I buy was re-branded. This resulted in a bigger card and a rubbish quality plastic cover which falls apart within a few weeks. The old one was fine, it fitted snugly into pockets and lasted months before succumbing to normal wear and tear.
When buying a new one today, it was nice to see a return to the tougher, old style cover. It’s still too big in my opinion, but it looks as though it might not disintegrate after a couple of weeks.

Bus sparkliness

While sitting on a new bus (I used to find new buses exciting as a young child, but remember there were only two tv channels at the time) a few minutes ago, I noticed that bits of the interior sparkled. I don’t mean sparkled as in clean, although the bus was very clean. As you’d expect from a new bus.
I mean sparkled.

Fecking buses

I’m not experiencing a very good bus service today.

In an attempt to cut down my working day, I’ve been starting later this week. But I’m finding that later buses aren’t too reliable and I’m spending a lot of time at bus stops. This morning’s lengthy waiting periods led me to the decision that I’d rather spend time in the office than at bus stops.
And, with a house guest potentially arriving five minutes ago, my even longer return home has added a mountain of icing on the Go-Northeast cake.
I now formally withdraw all of the nice things I said about said bus company a few weeks ago.

Timetables

I’m waiting at a bus stop right now. The bus I’d planned to catch left early and there appears to have been a timetable change, resulting in the removal of the next bus. Not that I was in the mood for standing here for a half hour.

My second in command is now en route to rescue me.

Bessie

It’s time to say goodbye to Bessie. ‘She’ has been much loved by my second in command, but at the grand old age of 14 has reached retirement. There’s a strong emotional bond, but Bessie has become too expensive. At some point there’ll no doubt be a Bessie II, but right now it’s time to celebrate her life and look back at all the good times spent with her.
